We have an exciting opportunity for a skilled materials scientist to join the Advanced Engineering Materials group at NPL in Teddington. This team is part of a unique scientific facility that supports UK industry, alongside a team of internationally recognised scientists and engineers. We develop new test methods and make measurements of challenging, complex, and unique nature.

Job Description:

  • You will work within a team of scientists and engineers to deliver NPL's National Measurement System (NMS) funded research programme with a focus on developing a metrology infrastructure for polymer composites.
  • You will help to deliver aspects of our NMS and commercial work focused on metrology for energy efficient manufacturing processes, circularity of materials, and high-value products, and mechanical, thermal, and physical performance evaluation of existing, emerging, and new formats of materials under challenging environments.
  • Your role will be predominantly laboratory based, helping to undertake mechanical and physical characterisation of polymer composite materials.
  • There will be opportunities to contribute to writing scientific reports and peer-reviewed papers, as well as presenting at conferences, to customers and at internal meetings.
  • As part of your role, there will be opportunities to learn standardised testing and to develop bespoke mechanical testing techniques for the laboratory.
  • Your role will be based on-site at Teddington.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • A degree in engineering or materials science.
  • Confident in mechanical design and an ability to visualise practical solutions to complex engineering problems.
  • Practical skills such as design and build, use of hand tools, drills etc.
  • Familiarity with Solidworks or a similar 3D CAD package.
  • Familiarity with different types of materials and basic materials testing techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Proficient in the use of office-based IT software systems such as Word, Excel etc.
  • Flexibility to learn new skills and keen to learn.

Estimated Salary: £45,000 - £60,000 per annum.
