About the Role
National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is seeking to appoint an experienced research scientist for a challenging role based in Teddington, South West London.
The successful candidate will work as part of a research team on state-of-the-art measurement systems, delivering collaborative R&D for industrial customers, presenting research in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences, developing international standards, and engaging with external organisations to maximise scientific progress.

Salary
We offer a competitive salary of £60,000 - £80,000 per annum, depending on experience.
Job Description
This permanent role involves developing Raman and other optical spectroscopies for life science and health applications. You will work closely with our research team to design, build, and operate state-of-the-art measurement systems, collaborate with industry partners to deliver cutting-edge research, and present your findings in leading international conferences and journals.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- A degree in physical sciences or engineering (ideally including a PhD).
- Hands-on experience in nonlinear optics and microscopy, particularly coherent Raman scattering methods.
- Knowledge and working experience of advanced data analysis tools such as MATLAB and/or Python.
- Collaborative and proactive team player, able to work independently.
- Excellent communication skills and publication record.
- Familiarity with handling biological samples would be an advantage.
