We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Scientist/ Scientist to join the Thermophysical Properties area within the Advanced Engineering Materials group based in Teddington, which is home to some unique facilities that support UK industry. This full-time role comes with a generous salary and benefits package.

Research and measurement sit at the very core of our business here at NPL. This is your chance to become an important part of a team that focuses on the delivery of specialist Measurement Services for a wide range of industries.

In this role you'll use of a range of measurement systems so you'll have a technical aptitude and familiarity with a laboratory environment. You'll have some knowledge of thermal measurement methods, an understanding of operating under a quality system, and strong time management skills.

**What you'll be doing**:

- Undertake measurements using thermal analysis methods (thermogravimetry, differential scanning analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, laser flash analysis, dilatometry).
- Test specimen preparation from a wide range of materials as needed.
- Develop standard procedures in the thermophysical properties area.
- Operate laboratory equipment and look to improve data generation using existing techniques wherever possible.
- Work on both short
- and long-term projects for internal and external customers.
- Analyse experimental data including preparation of internal and external reports.
- Adhere to quality and health and safety protocols.
- Work with the team to set-up, repair, calibrate and maintain test equipment.

We are looking for a self-motivated person who is keen to develop a career in materials science with an interest in thermophysical properties using a wide range of measurement techniques. Your role will involve experimental work in the laboratory, data analysis, presentation and customer facing activities. You will be able to solve problems in the laboratory as they arise and ensure timely delivery of research and commercial contracts for industrial customers.

Training will be provided, but you will be willing to learn and develop through self-directed learning.

**What you can bring to the role**:

- At Scientist Level - a materials science degree or a similar.
- Theoretical knowledge of thermal analysis methods with the ability to rapidly learn new skills.
- Ability to work independently in a small team and to tight deadlines.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- A good team player with a positive attitude.
- Customer facing skills both internally and externally with the ability to comprehend and explain relevance of results.
- Understanding of quality systems.
