Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Teacher of Deaf Students to join our team at Scottish Borders Council. As a key member of our education team, you will play a vital role in supporting pupils and staff in mainstream schools with the education of those pupils whose principal educational need is deafness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work in close partnership with colleagues, parents, and other agencies to ensure equity and excellence for all pupils.
  • Develop and implement effective strategies to support pupils with deafness, including the use of sign language, lip speaking, notetaking, and language modification.
  • Collaborate with teachers and support staff to ensure that pupils with deafness receive a comprehensive and inclusive education.
  • Provide training and support to teachers and staff on deaf education and sign language.
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices in deaf education and sign language instruction.

Requirements

  • Experience or formal qualification in sign language, such as BSL, SSE, or SEE.
  • A commitment to work towards formal qualification in BSL.
  • Well-developed, receptive, and expressive skills in sign language.
  • A current driving license and use of a vehicle (or ability to make reasonable adjustments for disability).
