About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced midwife to join our team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. As a Band 6 midwife, you will play a key role in providing safe, clinically effective, and individualized care to women and birthing people throughout their pregnancy journey.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, develop, implement, and evaluate programs of care for patients assigned to you.
  • Organize midwifery care for patients, utilizing the full skills of a midwife practitioner.
  • Discuss development and changes in midwifery and medical care with the Ward Manager/Team Leader.
  • Provide care to bereaved patients and their relatives, breaking bad news and supporting other staff.
  • Communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary professionals and agencies to ensure seamless care.
  • Take appropriate action to ensure patient safety, delegating patient care to midwives with the appropriate level of skill.
  • Implement and maintain midwifery procedures and guidelines in accordance with Trust policies and national guidance.
  • Ensure acceptable standards of care are maintained and initiate changes as necessary.
  • Deal with complex midwifery problems, such as child protection issues.
Education and Training
  • Supervise the training of qualified and unqualified staff, assisting junior staff to develop clinical and managerial skills.
  • Participate in teaching for all learners, working closely with local education providers.
  • Provide support and supervision as a mentor to student midwives.
  • Participate in further post-registration training, as evidenced by developments in practice.
Management
  • Autonomously manage a caseload within the ward area, making decisions and acting on care needs as they arise.
  • Inform and discuss with the Ward Manager/Team Leader any problems regarding management and/or care of the woman.
  • Be conversant with Trust and other policies and procedures, and mechanisms in place for effective care and efficient management of the Maternity Unit.
Professional
  • Maintain a professional attitude at all times, developing the role of the midwife in the best interest of women and the profession.
  • Be responsible for maintaining accurate and contemporaneous midwifery records, written and electronic.
  • Be aware of extended personal and professional development.
  • Be conversant and comply with Trust policies and regulations, and attend compulsory lectures as instructed.
  • Maintain good standards of care and assist in the implementation of recommendations from Government and professional bodies in relation to maternity care.
  • Participate in research projects where appropriate, reporting findings within a multi-disciplinary framework.
  • Implement research projects where appropriate.
  • Be professionally accountable for one's own midwifery practice, acting in a professional manner at all times.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance and improvement of one's own professional knowledge and competence.

  • Essential
    • Current, effective, and up-to-date registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

    • Able to undertake perineal repair (Band 6)

    • Flexible to change in demands of service
    • Ability to identify risk and understanding of Clinical Governance
    • NMC Registered Midwife
    • Evidence of further professional development or willingness to undertake
    • NMC recognised mentorship qualification (Band 6) or equivalent Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor Training

    • Flexible approach to working: prepared and able to work variable shift patterns, early, late, night shifts, over 7 days of the week
    • Standard Clauses:
    • A Disclosures and Barring Service check will be carried out where the position is eligible for a Disclosures and Barring Service Check in accordance with the 2012 Protection of Freedom Act and the guidance issued by the DBS.
    • All posts working with children or vulnerable adults are required to have an Enhanced DBS checked, including checking against DBS/ISA Vetting and Barring lists.
