Job Overview

The Sepsis Specialist is a key role within Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, providing clinical leadership, education, and training to improve patient outcomes for sepsis. This position involves raising awareness of sepsis, ensuring early recognition, assessment, and interventions through clinical education and direct clinical support.

Main Responsibilities
  • Deliver trust-wide multi-disciplinary teaching to enhance sepsis care.
  • Support the corporate delivery of sepsis key performance indicators.
  • Drive qualitative, innovative, productive, safe, evidence-based nursing care that promotes best practice and outcomes for patients.
  • Act as a clinical expert and resource for the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Provide ward staff with the necessary knowledge and information to support patients with sepsis.
  • Participate in the development and improvement of sepsis care to maximize quality of patient care in collaboration with healthcare professionals and external agencies.
  • Assist in developing trust policy to ensure practice meets internal and external healthcare standards.
  • Support clinical areas to identify local sepsis champions and improve education and compliance with sepsis tools.
  • Collaborate with Oncology specialist nurses to improve management of neutropenic sepsis.
  • Collaborate with Critical Care from a clinical and education perspective as part of the whole deteriorating patient agenda.
  • Maintain a high and visible profile in the clinical environment and act as a role model demonstrating high standards of care.

Person Specification
  • Essential criteria:
    • Registered practitioner
    • Degree in Nursing or equivalent
    • Teaching qualification
    • Ongoing personal/professional development
  • Desirable criteria:
    • ILS/APLS qualified
    • Leadership qualification/course
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years in an acute setting
    • Awareness of audit within the healthcare setting
    • Exposure to managing change
    • Evidence of teaching experience
    • Project management
  • Skills/Ability & Knowledge:
    • Advanced communication skills
    • Sound knowledge of early detection and management of sepsis in adults and children
