Position Overview

The Urgent Care Directorate at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and proactive Consultant in Emergency Medicine to enhance our dynamic team.

This role offers a unique chance to acquire extensive experience within a high-demand 56-bedded emergency medical unit and our same-day emergency care facility. The successful candidate will collaborate with a team of 12 consultants in Emergency Medicine, alongside 1 Registrar, 2 IMT3 doctors, 4 SHO trainees, 1 Foundation Year 1 doctor, 7 Junior Clinical Fellows, 3 Physician Associates, and 3 Advanced Clinical Practitioners. You will receive support from various allied health professional teams.

The inpatient and emergency services at our facility encompass around 1000 beds, including the Emergency Medical Unit and General Emergency Medicine. The General Emergency Medicine department includes specialties such as Gastroenterology, Diabetology, Endocrinology, Geriatric Medicine, and Stroke Medicine. The North West Lung Centre houses Chest Medicine, while Cardiology is part of the Regional Cardiothoracic Unit, which also features Cardiothoracic Surgery and Heart & Lung Transplantation. Other represented specialties include Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Gastrointestinal and ENT Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Rheumatology, Dermatology, and Pulmonary Oncology.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this role include:

  • Conducting assessments of inpatients and developing management strategies
  • Preparing for and participating in consultant-led ward rounds
  • Evaluating and managing patients through the same-day emergency care pathway
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and the patient's primary care team to ensure a seamless clinical experience
  • Ensuring timely and appropriate action on all test results
  • Engaging in Quality Improvement initiatives and providing education to both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
  • Offering guidance and support to junior medical staff
  • Performing any additional duties as requested by senior staff members
