Position Overview

Under the direct oversight of the clinical nursing team and in strict adherence to established protocols and guidelines, the Patient Care Support Specialist will assist in the delivery and management of designated patient care programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting health assessments
  • Collecting urine samples
  • Monitoring blood pressure
  • Recording ECGs
  • Performing phlebotomy
  • Providing wound care and suture removal
  • Administering spirometry tests
  • Delivering B12 injections
  • Administering flu vaccinations
  • Restocking surgical supplies and vaccines, ensuring proper inventory rotation
  • Preparing and maintaining clinical environments and equipment before, during, and after patient care procedures, including assisting physicians during minor surgical operations
  • Supporting the assessment and monitoring of patient health and wellness
  • Carrying out specific clinical tasks for designated patients as delegated and trained
  • Promoting awareness of health and wellness initiatives

Additionally, the role involves assisting in the collection and organization of data related to health and wellness needs.

Health & Safety Responsibilities:

The incumbent will contribute to the promotion and maintenance of health, safety, and security in accordance with the practice's health and safety policies. This includes:

  • Utilizing personal security measures in the workplace as per guidelines
  • Identifying risks associated with work activities and managing them effectively
  • Engaging in ongoing training to enhance knowledge and skills
  • Implementing appropriate infection control measures and maintaining a clean and safe work environment
  • Reporting health and safety hazards promptly
  • Ensuring cleanliness in personal and patient areas
  • Participating in annual infection control training
  • Recognizing and reporting potential risks
  • Demonstrating a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable individuals.

Performance and Quality Management:

The role requires maintaining documentation to support performance standards across various activities, including clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.

Data Quality Improvement:

Working within the clinical information system to enhance data quality, collaborating with data specialists as necessary.

Service Implementation:

The Patient Care Support Specialist will:

  • Apply practice policies and standards
  • Discuss the impact of policies on their work with team members
  • Participate in audits as appropriate.

In the course of their duties, the post-holder will handle sensitive information regarding patients and their families, practice staff, and other healthcare professionals. All information must be treated as confidential and shared only with authorized personnel in accordance with practice policies.

Experience Requirements:

Essential:

  • Experience working within a nursing team
  • Experience interacting with vulnerable patients

Desirable:

  • Experience in primary care settings
  • Experience in a general practice environment

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care

Desirable:

  • Certification in Phlebotomy
