London, Greater London, United Kingdom Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency Full time

Position Overview

We are seeking a Director of Biological Operations to lead our Analytical & Biological Sciences division within the Science, Research & Innovation sector.

This is a full-time role on a permanent basis, based in South Mimms, Hertfordshire. Please note that this position is exclusively available for candidates located in the UK.

About Us

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency plays a vital role in enhancing public health through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, supported by rigorous scientific research.

The Science, Research & Innovation Group is dedicated to delivering significant public health benefits, pioneering research innovations, and a unique approach through a comprehensive Science Strategy that balances innovation with sustainability and cost-effectiveness. This group comprises six sub-divisions: Innovation Accelerator, Clinical Investigations and Trials, Research and Development, Standards Lifecycle, Control Testing and Quality Assurance, and Health & Safety.

The Analytical and Biological Sciences (ABS) unit operates within the Research & Development sub-division, consisting of a diverse team of specialists engaged in both in vitro and in vivo methodologies to provide essential laboratory analysis and expertise aligned with the Agency's objectives. The Biological Services section within ABS supports three sub-groups of SR&I, focusing on Standards Lifecycle, Control Testing, and R&D in all aspects of in vivo experimentation. Our facilities accommodate a variety of species across multiple levels of containment, ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare through a dedicated and professional technical team.

Role Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this role is to oversee the Biological Services team, which is tasked with the management and care of various animal models essential for the Agency's regulatory functions in medicines control, reference material preparation, and regulatory research.

The Biological Services team is integral to the Agency's in vivo scientific initiatives, focusing on quality and safety testing of biological medicines, evaluation, and potency assignment of biological reference materials, as well as supporting a dynamic regulatory research agenda. The role emphasizes infectious diseases, biological medicines, countermeasures (such as vaccines and antibodies), and biologics (biological standards). As a leader in animal technology, the successful candidate will inspire and guide a highly skilled technical team, ensuring that all scientific procedures adhere to the highest standards of animal welfare while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Key Duties:

  • Manage the Biological Services team within ABS, providing daily oversight of unit operations. This role involves significant line management responsibilities, including leadership in planning, recruitment, and resource allocation to meet scientific and animal welfare requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with the Establishment Licence Holder, Home Office Liaison Contact, and Named Individuals to ensure compliance with Home Office regulations regarding animal welfare in research.
  • Establish and monitor standards for animal welfare, husbandry, housing, and regulated procedures.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with leaders of external animal facilities to share best practices in animal care and uphold responsibilities under the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research in the UK.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A degree and advanced qualification in life sciences or an equivalent Institute of Animal Technology (IAT) level 6 qualification or Fellowship, along with substantial relevant experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of Home Office regulations.
  • Extensive experience in developing, leading, and nurturing a high-performing team, including mentoring and conflict resolution skills.

We are committed to fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment, and we look forward to welcoming a dedicated professional to our team.
