Job Overview

The post holder will work closely with the multidisciplinary team in hospital to ensure a coordinated quality service and will be actively involved in education, audit, and research.

Main Duties of the Job
  • To provide specialist nursing advice underpinned by theory and experience to support patients and their families/carers.
  • To act as a specialist practitioner, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs of care in collaboration with senior colleagues achieved through systematic and holistic assessment, personalized care planning, onwards referral, and discharge to primary care teams.
  • To provide patients and staff with specialist advice to manage complex symptoms.
  • To develop and share expertise within the multidisciplinary team.
  • To develop and utilize the skills and expertise to act as a resource in the care of patients' needs, ensuring an optimum level of service to patients and their carers.
  • To work closely with community and network, other hospital and community staff to ensure an effective seamless service.
  • To present in the colorectal weekly multidisciplinary team meeting based on the Southmead site.
  • To transcribe radiology requests on ICE following successful completion of the IR(M)ER training course.
  • To deploy high-level skills in order to provide effective communication systems of support for patients, including breaking bad news and difficult conversations.
  • To develop and utilize the skills needed to embed patient and public involvement within the sphere of specialist nursing practice.
  • To ensure that all patients and families are aware of all treatment options, including clinical trials.
  • To work as a patient advocate, to help negotiate the patient journey and ensure optimum care is provided to each patient.
  • To nurture and maintain links with other healthcare agencies and organizations providing support and information to patients.
  • To adhere to and promote in others the importance of infection control guidelines and procedures.
  • To act as a positive role model for nurses in the hospital through the demonstration of excellent communication and clinical skills.
  • To expertly deliver complex sensitive condition-related information to patients and relatives.
  • To provide specialist support and advice in clinical areas, wards, and outpatients, to optimize quality improvement opportunities.
  • To analyze and respond to challenging and complex clinical situations utilizing specialist knowledge and analytical and judgmental skills to assess a range of options to formulate solutions and recommendations.
  • To act as a change agent, using skills that will motivate and reassure staff through negotiation and training, to facilitate the change process.
Education
  • To participate in the planning and delivery of formal and informal education programs for patients, carers, and all staff.
  • To ensure that professional knowledge and practice is regularly updated.
  • To take personal responsibility for life-long learning and personal development through clinical supervision and appraisal.
Research and Audit
  • To collate and record quantitative and qualitative data that provides evidence of productivity, outcomes, and quality, through audit and research.
  • To regularly lead on and participate in clinical audit and research.
  • To promote a culture of evidence-based practice.
  • To be involved with health promotion.
Management
  • To plan the provision of day-to-day organizational tasks.
  • To manage a complex caseload based on flexible principles, priorities, and the care needs of patients.
  • To participate in policy and service development and the development of protocols for specialist areas of work and for the wider healthcare community served by North Bristol Trust.
  • To participate in providing an initial response to complaints and queries, and have a working awareness of the North Bristol NHS Trust's complaints procedure.
  • To maintain accurate and concise records that produce statistical data for the purpose of evaluation and development of the service.
  • To be responsible for the effective, efficient, and safe use, maintenance, and storage of resources and equipment used in the performance of the role.
  • To keep accurate and up-to-date patient records.
Person Specification
  • Registered General Nurse – Level One and current NMC registration.
  • Evidence of study at Degree level degree in related health topic or willingness to undertake.
  • Evidence of formal ongoing professional development.
  • Recognised teaching qualification.
  • Significant post-registration experience in colorectal surgery.
  • Evidence of recent teaching experience.
  • Experience of involvement in change and development within a multidisciplinary team context.
  • Knowledge of the care and management of patients with colorectal cancers.
  • Knowledge of national and local developments in relation to the living with and beyond cancer program.
  • Up-to-date knowledge and understanding of national and local cancer issues and developments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with patients, relatives, and colleagues.
  • Good assessment skills.
  • Proven presentation and teaching skills.
  • Self-motivated and ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Ability to cope with emotional issues presented in the course of work and to support others.
Desirable Criteria
  • Computer literate, able to use databases/other relevant programs.
  • Experience of undertaking audit and/or research projects.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of various cancer-related treatments.
  • Communication skills training at level 2 or equivalent.
