Role Overview:
Reports to: Quadrant Manager (Technical Team Manager)
As part of the Service Delivery team, the successful candidate will provide vital, routine assistance for the research and Science Technology Platform (STP) laboratories. Laboratory Operations Assistants (LOAs) are generally assigned to specific floors but may be required to assist in various areas, leading to a diverse range of daily tasks. This position offers the potential for growth into a more technical operations role, encompassing responsibilities such as stock management, maintenance of scientific equipment, Health & Safety oversight, and collaboration with scientific teams to ensure efficient laboratory operations. This role is ideal for individuals aspiring to build a career in laboratory operations support.
Key Responsibilities:
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Ensuring the organization and cleanliness of laboratory spaces, including waste removal.
- Managing laboratory supply inventory; this includes stock verification, updating the electronic stock control system, receiving deliveries, and assisting with restocking procedures. Upholding the chain of custody from logistics to researchers, ensuring proper storage of temperature-sensitive items.
- Handling hazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols, including the preparation of hazardous waste for disposal.
- Supporting the maintenance of shared scientific equipment.
- Assisting with the inventory and safe storage of chemicals within the laboratories.
- Participating in the filling of Liquid Nitrogen vessels and changing gas cylinders as necessary.
- Performing additional duties as directed by the Technical Team Manager or Quadrant Manager.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Minimum qualifications include Mathematics, Science, and English GCSE, or relevant experience in a technical or service-oriented role.
- Basic proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to accurately follow instructions, document information, and execute tasks diligently.
- Self-driven with a flexible mindset and a strong attention to detail. Capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to interact confidently and diplomatically with individuals at all levels.
- Proactive in responding to immediate needs to ensure service provision to laboratories, with the ability to escalate issues to the Quadrant Manager as necessary.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Understanding of the importance of service quality.
- Excellent customer service abilities.
- Adaptable to the evolving needs of the team, willing to rotate tasks and work areas as required.
