Role Overview:

Reports to: Quadrant Manager (Technical Team Manager)

As part of the Service Delivery team, the successful candidate will provide vital, routine assistance to the research and Science Technology Platform (STP) laboratories. Laboratory Operations Assistants (LOAs) are typically assigned to specific areas but are expected to assist in various locations as needed, resulting in a diverse range of daily tasks. This position presents an opportunity to advance into a more technical operations role, encompassing responsibilities such as stock management, maintenance of scientific equipment, Health & Safety oversight, and collaboration with scientific teams to ensure laboratory efficiency. This role is ideal for individuals aspiring to build a career in laboratory operations support.

Key Responsibilities:

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring the organization and cleanliness of laboratory spaces, including waste removal.
  • Managing laboratory supply inventory; tasks include stock checks, updating electronic stock records, receiving deliveries, and assisting with restocking.
  • Handling hazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols, including the preparation of hazardous waste for disposal.
  • Supporting the maintenance of shared scientific equipment.
  • Assisting with the inventory and safe storage of chemicals within the laboratories.
  • Engaging in the filling of Liquid Nitrogen vessels and changing gas cylinders as necessary.
  • Performing additional duties as directed by the Technical Team Manager or Quadrant Manager.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum qualifications include Mathematics, Science, and English GCSE, or relevant experience in a technical or service-oriented role.
  • Basic proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to accurately follow instructions, document information, and perform tasks diligently.
  • Self-motivated with a flexible mindset and strong attention to detail; capable of working independently.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to interact confidently and diplomatically with diverse individuals.
  • Proactive in responding to immediate needs within the laboratory environment, with the ability to escalate issues to the Quadrant Manager as necessary.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization abilities.
  • Understanding of the importance of service quality.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Adaptability to changing team needs and willingness to rotate tasks as required.
