Role Overview:

Reporting to: Quadrant Manager (Technical Team Manager)

As a vital member of the Service Delivery team, the individual in this role will provide essential support for the research and Science Technology Platform (STP) laboratories. Laboratory Operations Assistants (LOAs) will typically be assigned to a specific floor but may be required to assist in various areas, leading to a diverse range of daily tasks. This position offers a pathway to a more technical operations role, which may include responsibilities such as stock management, maintenance of scientific equipment, Health & Safety oversight, and collaboration with scientific teams to ensure efficient laboratory operations. This role is ideal for individuals aspiring to build a career in laboratory operations support.

Key Responsibilities:

Your responsibilities will encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring the organization and cleanliness of laboratory spaces, including waste removal.
  • Managing laboratory supply inventory; this includes stock verification, updating electronic stock records, receiving deliveries, and assisting with restocking.
  • Safely handling hazardous materials in accordance with established protocols, including the preparation of hazardous waste for disposal.
  • Supporting the maintenance of communal scientific equipment.
  • Assisting with the inventory and safe storage of chemicals within the laboratories.
  • Engaging in the filling of Liquid Nitrogen vessels and the replacement of gas cylinders as necessary.
  • Performing additional duties as directed by the Technical Team Manager or Quadrant Manager.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum qualifications include Mathematics, Science, and English GCSE or relevant experience in a technical or service-oriented role.
  • Basic proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to accurately follow work instructions, document information, and perform tasks diligently.
  • Self-motivated with a flexible mindset and a strong attention to detail, capable of working independently.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to interact confidently and diplomatically with individuals at all levels.
  • Proactive in responding to immediate contacts to ensure service provision to laboratories, with the ability to escalate issues as needed.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization abilities.
  • Strong understanding of the importance of service quality.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Adaptability to the changing needs of the team, with the ability to rotate tasks and work areas as required.
