Medical Laboratory Assistant Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Medical Laboratory Assistant to support the diagnostic work of our department.

Candidates should have previous experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant or have worked in a diagnostic laboratory. A keen eye for detail and the ability to work in an organised manner are crucial to this role, which supports translation research, including the collection of residual specimens.

The department provides an extensive range of investigations to support the specialist patient population of our tertiary referral paediatric hospital, and also provides a specialist service to other hospitals. This is an excellent opportunity to work as part of a very experienced and dedicated team to gain extra skills and knowledge of paediatric microbiology.

This is a vibrant, progressive, well-equipped, and ISO15189 accredited laboratory.

  • Ensure all samples are prepared for analysis and stored according to strict quality standards, as defined in departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Ensure that appropriate preventative maintenance has been carried out and recorded on basic laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Regularly monitor and maintain laboratory equipment including pre-analytical equipment, centrifuges, fridges, media, disinfectant, and reagent preparation.
  • Report to the Senior Biomedical Scientist if work/systems fail to meet the specified standards and/or Turnaround Times.
  • Liaise with the Senior Biomedical Scientist and Quality Manager to undertake audits and corrective action as required.
  • Have a good understanding of the potential risks when handling infectious samples.
Person Specification
  • Previous laboratory experience.
  • Use of computers including Word and Excel.
  • Some scientific knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and equipment.
  • Health and Safety legislation.
  • Data protection act.
  • Previous laboratory work in a CPA/ISO or other accredited laboratory.
  • Use of laboratory information management systems.
Skills/Abilities
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Confident telephone manner.
