Location: London with the option for virtual participation (While most Panel members attend in person, virtual attendance is available. Some travel may be necessary, with expenses covered)

Compensation: This is a voluntary position, with reimbursement for UK expenses. An allowance is available for freelance/self-employed members of the AIL Panel.

To qualify for the allowance, members must be:
  • Full-time freelance or self-employed
  • A freelancer or self-employed individual who also holds a part-time salaried position (detailed information is available in the policy)
  • Unemployed or not receiving a salary
and must have participated in a formal committee meeting.

Members can claim £50 per hour, up to £350 per day, which may include travel time.

Role Overview:

The Acceptance in Lieu Panel operates as a subcommittee of Arts Council England's National Council, providing advice to the Secretary of State for DCMS and Ministers in devolved governments regarding items offered to the nation under the Acceptance in Lieu and Cultural Gifts Schemes. The panel comprises experts across various subject areas.

As a member of the AIL Panel, you will contribute significantly to enhancing public collections nationwide; you will engage in a process that facilitates the acquisition of remarkable objects for public ownership, ensuring they can be appreciated by current and future generations.

We seek individuals who are enthusiastic about public collections and possess a strong understanding of the museum and heritage sector throughout the UK.

For this position, we are looking for expertise in the following area:

Old Master Paintings

The ideal candidate will be an authority on European Old Master paintings from approximately 1300 to 1800, with particular knowledge of the Italian School being advantageous but not mandatory.

In addition to art-historical expertise, the role requires the ability to evaluate the physical condition of artworks under consideration, a working knowledge of the current art market and valuations, and an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of relevant collections in public institutions across the United Kingdom.
