Position Overview

  • Deliver care within the preterm birth program, following both Trust protocols and national benchmarks.
  • Ensure the preterm birth program is effectively provided to patients identified as high risk for preterm delivery.
  • Engage regularly with various stakeholders to enhance service quality and develop suitable care pathways.
  • Assume accountability for key performance metrics and prepare reports to demonstrate adherence to diverse quality care indicators.
  • Contribute to educational initiatives and training related to preterm birth.
  • Lead or participate in relevant research trials aligned with the service.
  • Oversee audits pertinent to the service.
  • Enhance personal management and leadership capabilities.

Main Responsibilities

  • Facilitate continuity of care for women at elevated risk of preterm birth.
  • Ensure that care provided is evidence-based, regularly monitored, and evaluated.
  • Lead the implementation and compliance monitoring of the Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle No. 5 – Reducing Preterm Birth.
  • Assess referrals to direct patients to appropriate care pathways.
  • Evaluate the current preterm birth service to ensure it meets equitable, evidence-based standards in line with local and national policies.
  • Utilize advanced communication skills effectively.
  • Provide clinical and professional leadership.
  • Embed clinical governance within practice.
  • Facilitate the sharing of information and best practices.
  • Maintain and enhance personal clinical skills.
  • Develop and disseminate evidence-based standards and multidisciplinary guidelines for preterm birth.
  • Create tools to evaluate and audit service efficiency and quality standards.
  • Deliver local training and educational programs.
  • Utilize IT systems to ensure accurate and timely patient data management, reporting to governance and quality meetings.
  • Act as a designated contact for patients.

Detailed Responsibilities

Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to provide the preterm birth service and coordinate with external agencies as necessary.

  • Ensure that care is evidence-based, monitored, and evaluated for the appropriate patient cohort.
  • Lead the implementation and compliance monitoring of the Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle No. 5 – Reducing Preterm Birth.
  • Assess referrals and ensure patients are allocated to suitable care pathways.
  • Share information regarding normal and abnormal results with patients, providing necessary counseling and support.
  • Ensure all patients receive appropriate follow-up care.
  • Review the existing preterm birth service to ensure it meets equitable and evidence-based standards.
  • Utilize advanced communication skills to ensure high-quality service delivery and timely resolution of unexpected situations.
  • Provide clinical and professional leadership to the preterm birth and bereavement service.
  • Act as a knowledgeable resource for staff regarding national, local, and Trust policies.
  • Embed clinical governance in practice.
  • Facilitate information dissemination and sharing of best practices.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary governance meetings and actively participate in performance and MDT meetings.
  • Maintain and develop personal clinical skills.
  • Develop and disseminate evidence-based standards and multidisciplinary guidelines for preterm birth.
  • Create tools to assess and audit service efficiency and quality standards.
  • Deliver local training and educational programs.
  • Utilize IT systems to secure accurate patient, workforce, and resource data, reporting to governance and quality meetings.
  • Act as a designated contact for patients transferred into or out of the hospital.
  • Lead the development of quality improvement projects related to preterm birth.
  • Work across the Trust as required.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

  • Registered midwife
  • Diploma or degree in midwifery
  • Comprehensive midwifery skills

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of relevant national standards and guidelines
  • Awareness of governmental and political influences
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, particularly in emergencies
  • Ability to present information to a multidisciplinary team
  • Capacity to manage difficult situations and conflicts
  • Experience in research and clinical audit
  • Proficient in IT and keyboard skills

Experience

  • Extensive clinical experience in a relevant area
  • Ability to manage a clinical caseload, including decision-making and initiative
