Position Overview

We are pleased to announce an opportunity to become a part of our dynamic Genomics Laboratory as a Molecular Genetics Specialist.

The Cambridge Genomic Laboratory (East GLH) is seeking to hire multiple Band 5 Technical personnel within our wet laboratory to execute specialized genomic procedures. It is essential to possess laboratory technical experience and the ability to mentor others for this highly proficient role.

Candidates with experience in a laboratory setting conducting diagnostic molecular tests are highly preferred, as the roles will be within teams that utilize the following methodologies:

  • Manual and automated extraction of DNA/RNA from various biological specimens for Rare Disease, Haemato-oncology, and Cancer services.
  • Assays including targeted sequencing and disease monitoring tests for Haem-Onc and Cancer services.
  • Microarray testing for Rare Disease and Haem-Onc.
  • Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) for Rare Disease, Haem-Onc, and Cancer.
  • Culturing of rare-disease and haem-onc tissues for karyotyping and FISH testing.

Our laboratory is part of the East NHS Genomic Laboratory Hub, one of seven Genomic Hubs established to deliver the National Genomic Medicine Service for NHS England, led by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, in collaboration with other regional hospitals.

Key Responsibilities

1. Conduct a wide range of diagnostic tests.

2. Oversee and train fellow technologists and junior staff.

3. Work towards or maintain registration with the AHCS or HCPC.

4. Manage and analyze data for diagnostic testing using computer systems.

Job Requirements

Working hours are currently set between 8 am and 6 pm, with potential expansion to 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Friday and weekends, so flexibility is encouraged.

Qualifications and Skills

  • BSc degree in a relevant Biological Science or equivalent.

  • Experience with specialized medical genomic methods including NGS, mutation analysis, FISH, Microarray, and karyotyping.
