The Editor for Middle East and Africa is a pivotal role within the World News Desk, characterized by its high visibility and dynamic nature. The chosen candidate will manage coverage across two continents during a period marked by military tensions, swift geopolitical shifts, and economic challenges. The Financial Times' coverage in these regions is subject to intense scrutiny.

You will assume a vital coordinating function, collaborating closely with senior editors. Your responsibilities will include commissioning stories from the FT's extensive network of reporters throughout the Middle East and Africa, as well as editing articles on sensitive subjects, often under tight deadlines. This position demands a resilient, adaptable team player with strong editorial acumen.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively commission articles, demonstrating the confidence to make significant editorial decisions that enhance the FT's reporting.
  • Edit a diverse range of content efficiently and accurately, from brief news updates to comprehensive analyses.
  • Lead innovative digital storytelling initiatives and be prepared to publish across various platforms.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for correspondents operating in challenging environments.
  • Present the global agenda during morning editorial meetings as required.
  • Participate in weekend shifts as part of the editorial team rotation.
