Position Overview

The Editor for Middle East and Africa is a prominent and dynamic role within the World News Desk. The ideal candidate will manage coverage across two continents during times of military unrest, swift geopolitical shifts, and economic challenges. This position demands meticulous attention, as few areas of coverage receive as much scrutiny.

You will be instrumental in coordinating efforts, collaborating closely with senior editors. Your responsibilities will include commissioning stories from the FT's extensive network of reporters in the Middle East and Africa, as well as editing articles on sensitive subjects, often under tight deadlines. This role is one of the most challenging in the newsroom, requiring a proactive, composed team player with strong editorial acumen.

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively commission stories, demonstrating the confidence to make significant editorial decisions that enhance the FT's coverage.
  • Edit a diverse range of articles promptly and accurately, from brief news pieces to comprehensive analyses.
  • Lead digital storytelling initiatives and be prepared to publish across various platforms.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for correspondents operating in high-risk environments.
  • Present the global agenda during morning editorial meetings when necessary.
  • Participate in weekend shifts as part of the editorial team rotation.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will possess a deep understanding of the regions and the interests of a business audience, capable of unpacking intricate political narratives and shaping a broad spectrum of coverage, from geopolitical influences to military strategies.

This role is well-suited for an experienced foreign correspondent looking to transition into an editorial position or an editor with regional expertise and reporting background. A keen assessment of risk and a thorough understanding of safety protocols in collaboration with the Managing Editor's office are essential.
