We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel to join our collaborative legal team. This role involves overseeing a specialized team focused on various legal domains including Planning, Property, Environmental, Contracts, Education, and Employment law. The ideal candidate will be expected to engage with the team in a hybrid work model.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert legal advice and manage service delivery within the legal team, ensuring adherence to the highest professional standards.
  • Act as a deputy for the Head of Legal Services.
  • Distribute tasks among team members while ensuring their professional development through training and performance evaluations.
  • Advise senior officials and committees as necessary.
  • Play a significant role in shaping the strategic direction of the legal services.
  • Oversee major projects and initiatives within the legal department.
  • Lead a team of approximately 12-14 professionals, fostering their growth through training sessions and workshops.
  • Engage with clients to enhance service delivery and performance standards.
  • Assist Counsel as needed.
  • Review and ensure the robustness of reports from other departments, providing legal implications as required.
  • Manage the team’s financial and human resources, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Stay updated on current legal requirements and inform colleagues accordingly.
  • Implement new procedures as necessary, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and legislation.

Qualifications:

  • A valid practicing certificate (as a Barrister, Solicitor, or Legal Executive).
  • A proactive approach with the ability to lead and develop a team.
  • Proven experience in team management.
  • Strong expertise in at least one of the following legal areas:
    • Regeneration
    • Property Law
    • Procurement and Contracts
    • Planning Law
    • Environmental Law
    • Commercial Law
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Dependable and self-sufficient.
  • Experience in a public sector legal environment.
  • Willingness to attend committee meetings as required.
