Position Overview

This role presents a unique opportunity to demonstrate clinical proficiency across a range of mental health disciplines. You will be part of a well-coordinated team comprising nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, assistant psychologists, and mental health practitioners. The position also offers avenues for teaching, leadership, and quality improvement initiatives.

Our staff are currently engaged in training for Open Dialogue, an innovative approach that has positively transformed perspectives within the Community Mental Health Team (CMHT). This method is anticipated to enhance the well-being of both our staff and the patients we serve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver medical assessments and recommendations for patients under the care of the Community Mental Health Team, attending Care Programme Approach (CPA) meetings for high-need patients as necessary.
  • Take a lead role in the evaluation of new referrals to the team, sharing this responsibility with fellow consultants.
  • Actively engage in the assessment of services and contribute to the planning of future service enhancements.
  • Empower team members to address local challenges daily using quality improvement methodologies without requiring prior approval.
  • Provide management, appraisal, and professional supervision to junior medical staff in accordance with Trust policies and in collaboration with consultant colleagues and the medical director.
  • Participate in local and broader mental health service planning and development activities.
  • Join the Consultant on-call rota, which currently operates on a 1:30 basis (non-residential), with additional remuneration for on-call duties.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management
  • Additional relevant clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych

Eligibility Criteria

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a license to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility within six months.
  • Approved clinician status or ability to achieve within three months of appointment.
  • Approved under S12 or ability to achieve within three months of appointment.

Desirable

  • Good standing with GMC regarding warnings and conditions on practice

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Strong knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills with a bio-psycho-social perspective
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Decision-making based on evidence and collaborative input
  • Compliance with duties under MHA and MCA

Desirable

  • Broad range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to the role within the NHS or comparable services

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

Essential

  • Ability to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
  • Participation in continuous professional development
  • Involvement in research or service evaluation
  • Capability to utilize and appraise clinical evidence
  • Active participation in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives
  • Ability to work collaboratively and lead a team
  • Commitment to shared leadership and collaborative efforts for improvement.

Desirable

  • Experience in planning and delivering relevant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Reflection on the purpose of CPD undertaken
