Position Overview

This role presents a unique opportunity to demonstrate clinical proficiency across various domains. You will be part of a well-supported environment, collaborating with a dedicated team of nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, assistant psychologists, and mental health practitioners. The position offers avenues for teaching, leadership, and quality improvement initiatives.

Our staff is currently undergoing training in Open Dialogue, a progressive approach that has already fostered a refreshing perspective among team members within the Community Mental Health Team (CMHT). This innovative method is anticipated to enhance the well-being of both our staff and the patients we serve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver medical expertise as necessary for patients under the care of the Community Mental Health Team, attending Care Programme Approach (CPA) meetings for complex cases and providing urgent assessments and advice as needed.
  • Take a leading role in the assessment of new referrals to the team, sharing this responsibility with fellow consultants.
  • Actively engage in the evaluation of services and contribute to the planning of future service enhancements.
  • Empower the team to address local challenges daily, utilizing quality improvement tools and methodologies without requiring prior approval.
  • Supervise, appraise, and provide professional guidance to junior medical staff in accordance with established personnel policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the service and business planning activities for the locality and, when appropriate, for the broader mental health service.
  • Join the Consultant on-call rota, which currently operates on a 1:30 (non-residential) basis, with remuneration including a 3% category A supplement and additional sessions.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management
  • Additional relevant clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych

Eligibility Requirements

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a license to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of appointment.
  • Approved clinician status or able to achieve within three months of appointment.
  • Approved under S12 or able to achieve within three months of appointment.

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Strong knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills with a bio-psycho-social perspective
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Decision-making based on evidence and experience
  • Competent in meeting duties under MHA and MCA

Desirable

  • A broad range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to the position

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

Essential

  • Experience in delivering undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
  • Participation in continuous professional development
  • Involvement in research or service evaluation
  • Ability to utilize and appraise clinical evidence
  • Active participation in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives
  • Capacity to work in and lead a team
  • Commitment to shared leadership and collaborative efforts for improvement.

Desirable

  • Experience in planning and delivering relevant teaching and training
  • Reflection on the purpose of CPD undertaken
  • Experience in clinical research and/or service evaluation.
  • Evidence of achievements in education, research, audit, and service improvement.
