Job Summary

The Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly experienced and motivated individual to fill the role of Head of Midwifery and Maternity Services. This is a senior leadership position that requires a strong clinical background, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to drive change and improvement in maternity services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide operational leadership and direction for midwives and nursing staff within the Maternity and Gynaecology Services.
  • Lead the development and implementation of the Maternity Transformation Programme, aligning with the National Maternity Agenda.
  • Be a point of contact for advice and expertise on professional nursing and midwifery issues.
  • Deputise for the Director of Midwifery in their absence.
  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for maternity and gynaecology services, working in partnership with women, birthing people, and expert consumer groups.
  • Ensure the delivery of key quality, performance, and governance plans, and work collaboratively to deliver the Trust's strategic direction, finance, and business agenda.
  • Provide assurance of proactive management of clinical and cost improvement plans, ensuring appropriate actions are taken to mitigate or respond to identified risks.
  • Support the Director of Midwifery for Women's Health and Paediatrics in delivering a complex agenda that drives efficiency and quality initiatives across maternity and gynaecology services.
Divisional and Strategic Development
  • Support the Quadrumvirate team in integrating the work of midwifery, nursing, administrative, and other professional/clinical staff to align services around effective and efficient delivery.
  • Contribute to the development of the midwifery profession through proactive involvement in local, regional, and national forums.
  • Represent the Trust on midwifery and maternity issues when required and delegated by the Chief Nurse or Director of Midwifery.
  • Support the Director of Midwifery to ensure professional nursing leadership with appropriate structures in place to support midwives and nurses at all levels.
  • Ensure that all statutory requirements are met and that all midwifery practice is consistent with the NMC rules and codes of practice.
  • Support the Quadrumvirate in identifying key drivers for change and opportunities for growing, improving, and redesigning services, and initiating strategic implementation plans.
  • Lead the continued strategic development of maternity hubs and the continuity of carer model in alignment with NHSE guidance.
Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong clinical background as an NMC Registered Midwife (RM).
  • Management qualification at diploma level.
  • BSc in Healthcare or equivalent.
  • Mentorship/ENB 998 or equivalent.
  • Evidence of recent clinical update.
  • Education to Master's Degree level or equivalent experience.
  • PMA (Des).

Desirable qualifications and experience include:

  • Leadership qualification.
  • Recent senior midwifery operational role at Grade 8B or above in an acute setting.
  • Proven experience of leading clinical teams and professional agendas.
  • Proven experience of leading corporate-wide/cross-boundary projects.
  • Proven experience of budgetary/financial management.
  • Proven experience of managing the governance agenda for maternity services.
  • Proven track record in improving patient experience and gaining patient/public views.
  • Ability to develop business cases.
  • Experience of chairing multi-disciplinary meetings.
  • Complex incident management and support for the wider team.
