POSITION SUMMARY

CoStar is in search of a seasoned legal professional to fill the role of Senior Legal Counsel, Head of Legal Affairs - International. This position entails significant responsibilities and senior-level interactions within a medium-sized in-house legal team. The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience (PQE), including a background at a prestigious law firm and prior in-house experience with a multinational organization. This full-time role is based in CoStar's European headquarters, with collaboration across teams in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, necessitating occasional travel to various offices.

Reporting directly to the General Counsel located in Washington DC, this legal professional will manage a wide array of legal issues pertinent to CoStar's international operations, encompassing intellectual property (copyright and trademark), contract negotiations with clients and vendors, litigation, employment law, real estate matters, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, and anti-piracy initiatives.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a creative and pragmatic approach to addressing global business and legal challenges, excel in a dynamic environment, possess outstanding credentials, and exhibit meticulous attention to detail and accuracy, along with strong written and verbal communication skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee and coordinate all legal matters related to CoStar's operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia;
  • Cultivate relationships with key stakeholders and collaborate with them to efficiently address their legal support needs.
  • Provide guidance on a comprehensive range of legal disputes, including content protection, intellectual property, and contractual issues.
  • Collaborate with the US-based privacy team to manage privacy and compliance matters, including providing advice and developing related policies for international operations.
  • Negotiate customer and vendor contracts, as well as leases, in partnership with the US-based team.
  • Support international mergers and acquisitions in collaboration with the US corporate team.
  • Oversee general corporate matters for international subsidiaries, including commercial agreements and regulatory compliance, in conjunction with the US corporate team.
  • Manage international employment-related legal issues, partnering with Human Resources to address employment complaints and advising on workplace policies.
  • Supervise anti-piracy and content protection legal matters, working with an in-house investigative team and external counsel as necessary.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to establish policies for piracy prevention and identification.
  • Manage relationships with external legal counsel when required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree from a reputable university with strong academic credentials.
  • Qualified solicitor in England and Wales (or equivalent qualification from a European jurisdiction).
  • Right to work in the UK is essential.
  • Minimum of 10 years' PQE, with experience at a leading law firm and prior in-house experience in a multinational setting.
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, including GDPR.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and negotiation abilities.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with adaptability to changing workloads.
  • Acute attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Initiative and decisiveness, with the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Knowledge of the US legal system and experience within a multinational corporation is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in additional languages such as French, German, or Spanish is desirable but not mandatory.
