Position Overview

We present an exceptional opportunity within our fast-paced Specimen Reception Department of the Pathology Directorate. We are in search of a confident, enthusiastic, and highly motivated Team Leader to oversee the Specimen Reception Team. The ideal candidate will embrace change, lead a substantial team in a dynamic environment, and demonstrate flexibility while maintaining a high level of accuracy under pressure.

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust stands as one of the largest acute hospital trusts in England, serving the diverse populations of Birmingham and Solihull. Our Trust encompasses four primary hospital sites.

Key Responsibilities

The Specimen Reception operates in a high-output environment across multiple sites, ensuring efficiency and accuracy in specimen handling.

The successful candidate will undertake administrative responsibilities including:

  • Day-to-day management and operational oversight of the Specimen Reception Team.
  • Monitoring and managing staff attendance and performance.
  • Conducting appraisals and approving annual leave.
  • Ensuring compliance with mandatory training requirements.
  • Allocating and delegating workloads effectively.
  • Organizing and adjusting work schedules based on service demands.
  • Participating in recruitment processes and conducting audits.

Additionally, technical duties will include:

  • Recording and maintaining specimen details and traceability.
  • Updating laboratory systems and ensuring proper housekeeping.
  • Managing the disposal of clinical specimens in accordance with protocols.
  • Handling telephone inquiries and sorting reports.
  • Centrifuging samples as required.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time position requiring flexibility to cover various shifts, including weekends and bank holidays, as part of the operational rota.

Essential Qualifications

  • GCSE qualifications in English and Maths.
  • Basic scientific knowledge and computer literacy.
  • Understanding of confidentiality principles.

Experience Requirements

  • Proven experience in data entry and analytical technology.
  • Prior experience in pathology departments and managing small teams.
