About the Role
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly motivated and organized Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Clinical Microbiology team. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our Biomedical Scientists in the processing of patient specimens and maintaining accurate records.
Main Responsibilities
- Receive, sort, label, and process patient specimens in accordance with Departmental procedures.
- Resolve issues such as mislabelled or missing samples, and perform reception duties.
- Enter data accurately and efficiently, and respond to telephone enquiries from clinicians and other healthcare workers.
- Relay test results to clinicians and other healthcare workers, and perform general housekeeping duties.
- Operate specialist laboratory equipment, as competency assessed.
- Support the induction and training of new entrant medical laboratory staff, and assist with the laboratory Quality Management System (QMS).
Requirements
- Education to GCSE in English and level 3 or equivalent.
- Awareness of the National Health Service and the role of Medical Laboratories.
- Awareness of Health and Safety issues.
- Ability to work as part of a team, with good verbal and written communication skills.
- Keyboard and mouse skills, with manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to handle blood and other bodily fluid samples.
