About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Medical Laboratory Assistant at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest teaching hospitals in England.
We are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic individual to support our HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists within Clinical Microbiology.
As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will be responsible for processing patient specimens for biomedical testing and maintaining all records involved in the diagnostic pathway after receiving appropriate training.
This includes:
- Receiving, sorting, labelling and preparing specimens
- Resolving issues such as mislabelled or missing samples
- Performing reception duties, data entry, and dealing with telephone enquiries
- Relaying test results to clinicians and other healthcare workers
- Performing general housekeeping duties
Depending on competency assessment, you may be required to operate specialist laboratory equipment.
You will provide support for and assist with the induction and training of new entrant medical laboratory staff and support with Q-pulse and the laboratory QMS where appropriate.
You will be guided by standard operating procedures (SOPs) and deal with routine enquiries, knowing when to seek advice or refer non-routine matters to a supervisor.
Main Responsibilities
As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will be responsible for:
- Safely handling, using, and disposing of biological samples
- Receiving, checking conditions, and recording details of incoming goods
- Collecting, sorting, and processing patient samples in line with Departmental procedure
- Reporting errors or incidents to the relevant supervisor or manager
- Preparing reagents according to standard operating procedures
You will work as part of a team and have a patient-focused attitude with quality in mind. Although this position is predominantly to work Mon-Fri 08:00-16:00, there may be a requirement for working at weekends and on statutory and public holidays.
