About the Role
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly motivated and organized Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team in Clinical Microbiology. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists in processing patient specimens for biomedical testing.
Main Responsibilities
- Receiving, sorting, labeling, and preparing specimens for testing
- Resolving issues with mislabeled or missing samples
- Performing reception duties, data entry, and dealing with telephone enquiries
- Relaying test results to clinicians and other healthcare workers
- Performing general housekeeping duties, including cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment
- Operating specialist laboratory equipment, as competency assessed
- Providing support for the induction and training of new entrant medical laboratory staff
- Supporting with Q-pulse and the laboratory QMS, as required
Requirements
- Education to GCSE in English and level 3 or equivalent
- Awareness of the National Health Service and the role of Medical Laboratories
- Awareness of Health and Safety issues
- Ability to work as part of a team and possess good verbal and written communication skills
- Keyboard and mouse skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
- Ability to handle blood and other bodily fluid samples
