Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and customer-focused Library Assistant to join our team at the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. As a key member of our Adult Services team, you will provide exceptional service to diverse patrons, perform a range of duties, and contribute to the overall success of our library.

Key Responsibilities
  • Customer Service: Deliver outstanding service to patrons of all ages, responding to their needs and providing assistance with library resources and services.
  • Circulation and Patron Management: Perform circulation and patron account management duties, ensuring accurate and efficient processing of library materials and patron information.
  • Public Area Maintenance: Maintain the cleanliness and organization of public areas, including the Tech Bar and other public service areas.
  • Monitoring and Security: Monitor public areas of the library, ensuring a safe and secure environment for patrons and staff.
  • Communication and Promotion: Communicate and apply library policies and procedures, promoting library services and participating in outreach and programming activities.
  • Clerical and Administrative Tasks: Perform data entry, record editing, and other clerical tasks as assigned, supporting the efficient operation of the library.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: High school diploma or high school equivalency required; specialized education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for part or all of the required elements.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of urban public library concepts and techniques, literature and media, digital resources, and current technology; ability to operate library computers, equipment, software, and systems.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university; experience working in public libraries or other community settings; fluency in a language in addition to English.
Work Environment and Schedule

Works in assigned areas, including office areas, training rooms, and library locations, as needed. Normal office exposure to noise, stress, and interruptions. The work week is 30 hours, with a schedule that may include evening and weekend hours.
