Soft Matter Scientist Industrial Placement

Join our team as a Soft Matter Scientist and contribute to cutting-edge research in antimicrobial resistance. As a placement year student, you will work alongside experienced scientists in the Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) group to explore the interaction between microbes and antimicrobial agents.

About the Role

This exciting opportunity is designed for undergraduate students who are eager to gain hands-on experience in a research-driven environment. You will be responsible for carrying out practical lab work, characterisation experiments, and data analysis using SANS instruments. Your contributions will help advance our understanding of antimicrobial resistance and develop new medicines to combat this global threat.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct experiments and characterisation techniques to explore the interaction between microbes and antimicrobial agents
  • Learn and apply SANS techniques and analysis methods to understand the structural characterisation of samples
  • Present research findings through oral and written presentations, reports, and publications
Requirements

To be eligible for this placement, you must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree course and returning to university to complete your degree after the placement. You should also have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement and be able to commence employment in summer 2025.

We are looking for candidates with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. A passion for learning new scientific principles and experimental techniques is essential, as well as effective problem-solving skills and a willingness to perform or learn how to perform practical experiments.
