Ultrafast Spectroscopy Research Scientist Industrial Placement

As a Research Scientist in our Ultrafast Spectroscopy group, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research projects, developing applications of ultrafast time-resolved infrared (IR) spectroscopy for problems in catalysis, fuel cell science, and battery science. You will also contribute to the design and development of new instruments for the ULTRA facility's HiLUX project.

This is a role involving scientific research and will be fulfilling if you are a chemist leaning towards experimental physical chemistry or catalysis, or if you are a physicist interested in spectroscopy, optics, lasers, and molecular quantum mechanics. We can consider a computational chemistry project placement if you are confident with the theory.

About the Role and Key Responsibilities

As a Research Scientist, you will be responsible for:

  • Conducting scientific research projects, including research, planning, execution, and writing up
  • Assisting in R&D group/ULTRA operational tasks, including maintaining equipment, purchasing materials/equipment, and helping with administrative tasks
  • Contributing to the research culture of the facility, including participating in group meetings, seminars, and discussions

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

Essential Requirements
  • Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
  • Required or have requested to take an industrial placement year
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
  • Able to commence employment in summer 2025
  • A level or equivalent international qualification in any two of Physics, Chemistry, and Maths at B standard or higher
  • Enrolled on a physical sciences-based degree course and achieving upper second or first class standard in exams to-date
  • Demonstrable knowledge and interest in the science relevant to the position
  • Able to demonstrate and discuss the key skills of a scientist learned at A-level and on degree course
  • Agree to work in a safe, organised, tidy manner and adhere to all organisational safety protocols
