High-Energy Laser Scientist Industrial Placement

Salary: £23,328 per annum

Hours: Full time

Contract Type: Fixed Term (12 months)

Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a High-Energy Laser Scientist on an industrial placement.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a world-leading research environment, working on cutting-edge laser technology and collaborating with renowned scientists.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading your own assigned project, under the guidance of a Technical Manager, where you will have direct influence over the outcomes
  • Taking an active role in experiments and supporting world-renowned scientists, learning new skills and experiences continuously
  • Developing techniques to improve DiPOLE lasers for improved performance (higher energies and repetition rates) and exploring new applications, both on your own and as part of a team
  • Learning how to operate lasers; and high-vacuum systems in a clean room environment
  • Learning and developing computer modelling and system control skills, to support your own project as well as other ongoing research activities
  • Running experiments, analysing data and reporting your findings to the team, and other placement students, via written reports and presentations

Essential qualifications include:

  • Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
  • Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
  • Able to commence employment in summer 2025
  • Predicted grades corresponding to a 2:1 or higher
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently
  • Enthusiastic about lasers
  • Effective communication skills
  • Works well in a team
  • Responsible approach to health and safety

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Experience working in laboratories
  • Experience with lasers / optics
  • Experience with coding for data analysis
  • Experience with computational modelling of physical systems
  • Experience using computer software to control systems
