Molecular Research Fellow in Bacterial Pathogenesis

Role Summary:We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to engage in groundbreaking research on the enteric pathogen Campylobacter jejuni, which is the predominant bacterial agent responsible for gastroenteritis in humans worldwide. This role focuses on utilizing molecular and phenotypic techniques to analyze Outer Membrane Vesicles (OMVs), which are crucial in the virulence of C. jejuni.
Research Objectives:The successful candidate will investigate the following:
- Importance of the MLA System: Assess how the Maintenance of Lipid Asymmetry (MLA) system contributes to the production of OMVs in C. jejuni.
- Host Interaction: Examine the biophysical and functional characteristics of C. jejuni OMVs and their effects on avian host responses.
- Vaccine Development: Explore the potential of OMVs as non-replicative vaccine candidates against C. jejuni colonization in poultry.
This position will be based at LSHTM under the supervision of Dr. Ozan Gundogdu, with collaborative research opportunities at IISER Kolkata, India, alongside Dr. Amirul Islam Mallick and his research team.
Candidate Profile:The ideal applicant will possess a postgraduate degree, preferably a doctoral qualification, in a relevant field. Essential experience includes:
- Expertise in Campylobacter jejuni pathogenesis, particularly in avian models.
- Proficiency in genotypic and phenotypic methodologies, including the development of targeted mutants.
- Application of this knowledge in translational research aimed at devising intervention strategies, such as vaccine development.
- Familiarity with high-resolution microscopy techniques and genomic analysis.
- Experience with in vivo chicken infection models is highly advantageous.
This is a full-time position, fixed-term, and funded by the BBSRC. The remuneration will be aligned with the Academic Pathway salary scale, Grade 6, reflecting the candidate's experience and qualifications. The role includes comprehensive benefits such as annual leave and pension scheme membership.
