Postdoctoral Research Associate in Pathogen Biology

Role Summary:We are looking for a dedicated Postdoctoral Research Fellow to investigate the enteric pathogen Campylobacter jejuni, recognized as a primary bacterial agent of gastroenteritis worldwide. This role will focus on employing molecular and phenotypic techniques to analyze Outer Membrane Vesicles (OMVs), which are crucial for the virulence of C. jejuni.
Research Objectives:The project aims to explore the Maintenance of Lipid Asymmetry (MLA) system, a vital multi-protein complex found in all Gram-negative bacteria, responsible for lipid transport across the outer membrane. Our hypotheses include:
- Assessing the significance of the MLA system in the production of OMVs by C. jejuni.
- Investigating how the biophysical and functional characteristics of C. jejuni OMVs influence avian host responses.
- Evaluating the potential of OMVs as non-replicative vaccine candidates.
This position will be hosted at LSHTM under the guidance of Dr. Ozan Gundogdu, with collaborative research opportunities at IISER Kolkata, India, alongside Dr. Amirul Islam Mallick and his research team.
Candidate Profile:The ideal candidate will possess a postgraduate degree, preferably a PhD, in a relevant discipline, along with substantial experience in Campylobacter jejuni pathogenesis within avian models. Expertise in both genotypic and phenotypic methodologies, including the development of targeted mutants, is essential. Familiarity with translational research aimed at devising intervention strategies, such as vaccine development, is highly valued. Proficiency in high-resolution microscopy techniques and genomics is also required. Experience with in vivo chicken infection models will be considered advantageous.
