London, Greater London, United Kingdom London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Full time
Position Overview:

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) stands at the forefront of global public health education and research. Our commitment is to enhance health and health equity both locally and globally, collaborating to achieve excellence in public health initiatives.

Role Summary:

We are looking to recruit two Laboratory Research Associates to join our tuberculosis translational biology research team, which is focused on the innovation of new antibiotics for tuberculosis treatment. This project is supported by Janssen Pharmaceutica and involves the creation of novel molecular biology tools to investigate the biology of the pathogen, alongside conventional bacteriology techniques.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research in a containment level 3 laboratory environment.
  • Implement routine genetic methodologies, including CRISPR-based knockdown and target overexpression.
  • Perform testing of new drug candidates through assays such as Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), and kill kinetics assays.
  • Utilize existing and develop new bacteriology and microbiology techniques to assess new drug targets for tuberculosis through chemical genomics and proteomics.
Candidate Profile:

We seek individuals with a relevant undergraduate degree in biochemistry, microbiology, life sciences, or equivalent experience. Ideal candidates will possess hands-on experience in genetic manipulation, susceptibility testing, and bactericidal assays, with a preference for familiarity with M. tuberculosis. Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning and RNA/DNA preparation, is essential. Experience in a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory setting is advantageous, along with knowledge of MICs, MBCs, RNA/DNA isolation, and bacterial transfection.

Successful candidates will demonstrate strong organizational abilities, effective time management skills, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a research team. Excellent interpersonal skills, encompassing both oral and written communication, are also critical.

Employment Details:

The positions are full-time, comprising 35 hours per week, and are fixed-term. The roles are funded by Janssen Pharmaceutica and offer an exceptional opportunity for enthusiastic and motivated scientists eager to learn about the drug discovery process.

The salary is aligned with the Academic Pathway salary scale, and additional benefits include annual leave entitlement and membership in the Pension Scheme.
