London, Greater London, United Kingdom University of Bristol Full time

Position Overview
A postdoctoral opportunity is available under the mentorship of Dr. Thomas Gorochowski in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol, in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Ouldridge from Imperial College London. This role is part of a multidisciplinary initiative known as EEBio, which aims to enhance the reliability of engineered biological systems through feedback control methodologies.

Role Duration
This is a 3-year position, with the potential for extension, focusing on immediate engagement.

Collaboration
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with other postdoctoral researchers within the EEBio program across the Universities of Bristol and Oxford, as well as Imperial College London.

Key Responsibilities
You will be tasked with the development of a computational framework designed to expedite our capacity to engineer biological systems at various scales, ranging from molecular circuits to cellular communities. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Creating innovative computational tools and integrating existing software to enable researchers to design and evaluate biological systems in silico.
  • Conducting thorough analyses of experimental results.
  • Developing domain-specific languages (DSLs) to streamline researcher interactions with the system.
  • Creating digital biological twins to simulate biological processes across different scales.
  • Implementing data standards, such as the Synthetic Biology Open Language, to enhance data integration with external tools.
  • Exploring cloud computing resources and dedicated servers to improve accessibility of these services.

Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in software engineering, coupled with a genuine interest in the engineering of biological systems. A proven ability to acquire new skills and thrive in a diverse, multidisciplinary environment is essential. Additionally, hands-on experience with Rust and Julia programming languages, high-performance computing (including GPU programming), and the development of extensible software will be advantageous.
