Position Overview: The Meteorology Department at the University of Reading invites applications for a dedicated Research Fellow to join our Energy-Meteorology Research Group. This role focuses on pioneering methodologies aimed at enhancing the precision of meteorological forecasts, extending from short-term to medium-term horizons, specifically tailored for the energy industry.

Project Significance: As the energy sector increasingly transitions towards renewable sources, accurate weather forecasting becomes critical in mitigating risks associated with energy systems. This initiative seeks to harness cutting-edge AI methodologies to integrate diverse forecasting data sources, ultimately producing dependable forecasts with lead times spanning from days to months.

Collaboration: The successful candidate will engage in close collaboration with our industry partner, British Gas / Centrica, applying the developed forecasting models to real-world energy applications.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Robust analytical capabilities in mathematical and physical sciences.
  • Expertise in scientific programming and computational methods.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Familiarity with numerical weather prediction techniques, especially ensemble forecasting.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with industry stakeholders.
