Position Overview

We are pleased to announce an opportunity for a seasoned Band 6 nurse to transition into a Band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse role within the Surgical High Dependency Unit (SHDU) at Barts Health NHS Trust.

This position is designed for those looking to enhance their leadership and management capabilities while gaining profound insights into advanced nursing roles. You will be responsible for guiding a dedicated team of nurses and healthcare support workers, all while delivering essential clinical care to elective surgical patients in a critical environment.

Applicants must have successfully completed a relevant high dependency course (or equivalent critical care modules) and possess significant experience at the Band 6 level in a high dependency or critical care context.

The successful candidate will take on comprehensive responsibilities for the unit, ensuring effective leadership and close collaboration with the Matron. You will serve as a professional role model, providing guidance and management to the nursing team in alignment with Trust values.

Main Responsibilities

The Senior Sister/Charge Nurse will:

  • Deliver exceptional care to patients, staff, colleagues, and other service users, in line with the Trust's WeCare values.
  • Oversee the management of clinical areas, including the assessment of care needs, development, implementation, and evaluation of care plans, and setting standards during shifts.
  • Manage and provide line management for a team of staff within the SHDU.
  • Act as a deputy for the Matron in their absence when necessary.
  • Ensure the immediate management of patients in the surgical High Dependency Area, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to guarantee safe and compassionate care.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of activities and communications, adhering to legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Support the Matron in service development and provide motivation and support to the team.
  • Lead by example as an expert practitioner.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of the UK
  • First Degree/BSc
  • Qualification in Specialism: High Dependency or Critical Care Course
  • ILS/ALS Certification

Desirable Criteria

  • Working towards a master’s degree
  • Knowledge of NHS policy and strategic changes in healthcare
  • Preparation for Mentorship Course
  • Leadership program participation

Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Extensive experience as a Band 6 nurse in a high dependency or critical care setting
  • Evidence of mentoring and developing staff
  • Experience in surgical nursing
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring junior staff

Knowledge

Essential Criteria

  • Up-to-date knowledge of clinical specialties relevant to patients (evidence-based practice)
  • Understanding of current NHS, professional, and educational issues
  • Familiarity with the principles of Clinical and Shared Governance and their implications for practice.
