Role Overview:

  • Oversee Colour & Materials initiatives across various projects, ensuring alignment with organizational goals while assisting the Colour and Materials Manager with daily operations.
  • Effectively communicate and escalate critical matters to the Colour and Materials Manager.
  • Act as a deputy to the Colour and Materials Manager.
  • Provide support to the Colour and Materials team in delivering project objectives, mentoring both senior and junior designers.
  • Conduct research on market trends, lifestyle preferences, and design influences for current and upcoming projects.
  • Collaborate closely with suppliers to develop materials that meet production specifications.
  • Engage with designers, functional teams, marketing, and procurement to ensure proposals meet established standards.
  • Represent the Colour and Materials team in technical and senior-level meetings as necessary.
  • Design exceptional products that visually narrate their intended function.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to the Colour and Materials Manager.
  • Communicate and advance critical issues to the Chief Designer, Design Operations Manager, and Design Director.
  • Define, submit, and manage the Colour and Materials development budget.
  • Conduct performance evaluations as needed, particularly for junior and senior designers.
  • Collaborate with broader Design, Clay, and Engineering teams to present viable solutions for approval.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of design standards and processes.
  • Participate in the formulation of Design Strategy.
  • Present and advocate for Colour & Materials concepts to senior management and executive levels.
  • Assist in embedding the design philosophy and principles to foster a robust future design identity.
  • Support the Colour and Materials team in delivering innovative materials and finishes for all projects.
  • Develop Colour & Materials program vision themes and Material Variant Lists for all projects.
  • Compile and present the Colour & Materials Design research report and Design Intent Report for all projects.
  • Submit plans for long lead-time components across all projects.
  • Contribute to the Marketing Features List.
  • Establish and confirm Trim Level Strategy.
  • Deliver target samples and assist in ensuring design quality for all colours and materials.
  • Align design intent, quality, and manufacturing feasibility with engineering and commercial requirements.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • A degree in Art and Design or a related field, with substantial experience as a Colour and Materials Designer.
  • Experience delivering Colour & Materials for projects from concept to production.
  • Proven experience in leading and mentoring a high-performing team under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation, interpersonal skills, initiative, adaptability, and commitment to task completion.
  • Solid experience in an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) environment within an automotive design department.
  • Highly creative with a strong sense of colour vision, harmony, and an understanding of perceived value and craftsmanship.
  • In-depth knowledge of automotive and industrial colours and materials.
  • Strong presentation skills to articulate and convey design intentions.
  • Proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Microsoft Office.
  • Essential project planning and management skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Colour & Materials and vehicle design.
