Ophthalmology Consultant with a Focus on Sub-Specialties

Position Overview

We are seeking a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a specialized interest in Cataract and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) to join our esteemed team at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a newly established position that offers the opportunity to engage in both General Ophthalmology and your specific sub-specialty interests.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be based at our facilities and will be responsible for:

  • Delivering comprehensive ophthalmic services to the community.
  • Participating in an emergency on-call service on a rotational basis.
  • Engaging in both undergraduate and postgraduate education, contributing to the training of future ophthalmologists.
  • Promoting Clinical Governance and ensuring high standards of patient care.

Team Structure

You will collaborate with a dedicated team of nine Consultant Ophthalmologists, supported by Specialty Doctors, trainees, and a variety of allied health professionals, including Ophthalmic Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Technicians. This collaborative environment fosters professional development and enhances service delivery.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a License to Practice.
  • MBBS and FRCophth or equivalent qualifications.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT/CESR or European Community Rights.
  • A minimum of three years of higher surgical training in an approved Ophthalmology post.
  • Extensive experience in managing ophthalmic conditions, particularly AMD.

Skills and Competencies

Essential skills include:

  • Proven ability to conduct clinical and surgical procedures across all areas of ophthalmology.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, with a commitment to effective departmental management.
  • Awareness of service management issues and the ability to implement change processes.

Research and Audit

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Involvement in clinical audit and a track record of research in ophthalmology, including publications.

Teaching and Education

Evidence of accreditation as a Consultant Clinical Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC is essential, with additional accreditation as a Consultant Educational Supervisor being desirable.
