Position Overview:

The successful candidate will engage in the creation of mathematical frameworks for microbial ecosystems.

These frameworks will consist of predictive mechanistic models aimed at synthesizing diverse data sources, including population densities, metabolic profiles, and gene expression levels.


The formulation of these models may integrate elements of dynamical systems, such as Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) and Stochastic Differential Equations (SDEs), alongside metabolic modeling techniques.

To calibrate these models with empirical data, proficiency in numerical optimization strategies, including linear programming, as well as methodologies from Bayesian statistics and machine learning—such as variational inference and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)—will be essential.

These innovative tools will facilitate the analysis of interconnected metagenome-metabolome datasets derived from clinical specimens and controlled experimental setups, with the objective of elucidating the impact of therapeutic dietary interventions on Crohn's disease.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal applicant should possess a PhD in mathematics, physics, bioinformatics, statistics, or a closely related discipline that emphasizes mathematical modeling.

A First-class degree in any scientific field is also required.

Outstanding candidates lacking a PhD may still be considered, provided they hold a Master's degree in a quantitative field.


Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., R, Python, C/C++) and a foundational understanding of calculus and statistics are mandatory for this position. Familiarity with command line bioinformatics is a plus.

A demonstrated history of scientific writing and experience with oral research presentations are critical.

Familiarity with Bayesian statistics, bioinformatics related to metagenomics or metabolomics, and a biological comprehension of microbial communities and their metabolic processes would be beneficial.

This role is positioned at an SC6 level; however, candidates with substantial experience in mathematical modeling, a proven ability to manage and lead the analysis of intricate datasets, and the potential to mentor graduate students may be considered for a Senior Postdoctoral Research Scientist role at level SC5.

Additional Information:

The salary for this position will range from £35,300 to £43,750 per annum, contingent upon qualifications and experience for the SC6 level, and from £43,550 to £54,900 per annum for candidates meeting the SC5 level criteria.

This is a full-time role for a three-year contract.
