Job Summary:

The Earlham Institute is seeking a highly skilled Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join our team and contribute to the development of mathematical models of microbial communities. The successful candidate will have a strong background in mathematical modelling and a PhD in mathematics, physics, bioinformatics, or statistics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop predictive mechanistic models of microbial communities that integrate multiple sources of data, including abundances, metabolites, and expression levels.
  • Apply numerical optimisation methods, such as linear programming, Bayesian statistics, and machine learning, to fit the models to data.
  • Use the developed models to interpret coupled metagenome-metabolome samples from clinical samples and controlled reactor experiments.
  • Collaborate with the research team to design and implement experiments to test the models.
  • Communicate research findings through scientific writing and oral presentations.

Requirements:

  • PhD in mathematics, physics, bioinformatics, or statistics, or a related subject area with a strong element of mathematical modelling.
  • First-class degree in any area of science.
  • Strong programming skills in at least one language, such as R, Python, or C/C++.
  • Basic understanding of calculus and statistics.
  • Experience with command line bioinformatics.
  • Proven record of scientific writing and oral research presentations.

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of Bayesian statistics, bioinformatics of metagenomics or metabolomics.
  • Biological understanding of microbial communities and metabolism.

What We Offer:

  • Salary on appointment will be within the range £35,300 to £43,750 per annum for the SC6 level role, and £43,550 - £54,900 per annum for the SC5 level criteria.
  • Full-time post for a contract of three years.
