Job Summary:

The Earlham Institute is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join our team and contribute to the development of novel experimental and computational approaches to uncover fundamental principles in the assembly, functions, and dynamic behavior of microbial communities associated with plants, algae, and other photosynthetic organisms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and reconstitute synthetic microbial communities in gnotobiotic systems using established microbial culture collections.
  • Use amplicon, shotgun, and transcriptome sequencing to track the behavior of these microcosms and study its mechanistic basis by means of genetics and controlled perturbation of environmental parameters.
  • Contribute to the development of laboratory protocols and optimize existing methods for DNA/RNA extraction, sequencing library preparation, and microbiology techniques.
  • Collaborate with an international, multi-disciplinary team of scientists to advance the field of host-microbiota interactions.
  • Supervise students and contribute to laboratory management, depending on experience and qualifications.

Requirements:

  • PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, plant science, microbial ecology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with DNA/RNA extraction, sequencing library preparation, and microbiology techniques.
  • Interest in working with microalgae and/or bacterial communities.
  • Ability to lead research projects and co-supervise students.

What We Offer:

  • A competitive salary within the range £35,300 to £43,750 per annum for the SC6 level role, and £43,550 to £54,900 per annum for candidates who meet the SC5 level criteria.
  • A full-time post for a contract of 3 years.
