Position Overview

The Molecular Laboratory Supervisor will play a crucial role in advancing the mission of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew by overseeing the molecular laboratory dedicated to a significant initiative aimed at sequencing a vast collection of fungi and lichen specimens. This project encompasses a comprehensive strategy utilizing both whole genome sequencing and barcoding methodologies.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall management of laboratory operations associated with this initiative. This includes direct oversight of the laboratory team, ensuring effective training and development. Additionally, the role involves designing and supervising research and development activities, as well as contributing molecular data from fungal collections to facilitate DNA sequencing efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operations of the molecular laboratory.
  • Lead and mentor laboratory personnel.
  • Design and oversee R&D projects related to fungal genomics.
  • Contribute to training programs and assist in the preparation of scientific publications.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for individuals with proven expertise in managing molecular laboratories and leading lab teams. Essential qualifications include experience in high-throughput sequencing and genomics techniques. Candidates with a background in museomics and the sequencing of historical collections will be given priority. Familiarity with standard operating procedures (SOPs), basic bioinformatics, and statistical analysis is expected. Knowledge of health and safety regulations in the UK and experience working with fungi will be advantageous. A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant scientific discipline is required.

Contract Details

This is a fixed-term position with the potential for extension, based within the Science Directorate. The role may involve some travel within the UK.
