The Role: Senior Molecular Assay Scientist
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Scientist to join our growing R&D team. You will play a key role in the design, development, and validation of innovative molecular assays, particularly those utilizing isothermal amplification chemistries like LAMP.
Key Responsibilities:- Develop and validate highly sensitive and specific in vitro molecular assays (including LAMP) for the detection of pathogens across various sectors including human, animal, plant health, and beyond.
- Leverage your expertise in phylogenetic/genomic analysis to conduct comparative analyses of assay specificity (inclusivity and exclusivity).
- Contribute to scientific R&D projects by designing, executing, and analyzing laboratory experiments.
- Conduct regular in silico analysis and reporting of designed assays against evolving target pathogens. This includes the design and maintenance of necessary bioinformatics tools and comprehensive reporting.
- Resolve complex technical challenges within the context of clinical diagnostic assay requirements, ensuring strict adherence to published regulatory standards and guidelines.
- Accurately document and present scientific results through meticulous laboratory records, written reports, and engaging presentations.
- Prepare and QC master mixes and reagents for the production of CE-marked and RUO products. Take on additional ad hoc/project work as required.
- PhD in a relevant life science discipline such as Microbiology, Genomics, Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry.
- Significant experience (5+ years) in molecular assay development and optimization, particularly within the context of LAMP, ideally gained within an IVD/diagnostics industry environment.
- Proven proficiency in relevant laboratory techniques including PCR, LAMP, nucleic acid extraction and optimization, and processing biological samples.
- A strong understanding of quality standards and experience working in regulated environments (ISO 13485, UK MDR, IVDR, etc.).
- Solid expertise in bioinformatics tools and methodologies, with a demonstrated ability to utilize computational methods for analyzing genetic sequences.
- Experience leading projects and independently delivering against agreed timescales and outputs.
- An adaptable mindset, thriving within a fast-paced R&D environment with evolving priorities.
- Excellent communication skills and a personable nature to foster strong relationships within the team and with key stakeholders.
- Desirable laboratory experience includes: working in a regulated environment; infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance; precision serial dilutions; DNA sequencing; working with a containment level 2 facility; using automated molecular diagnostic systems; next generation sequencing; advanced multiplex applications; digital PCR.
- Experience line managing and/or leading/mentoring small teams would be beneficial although not essential.
