Position Overview

We are pleased to announce an opportunity for a Creative Arts Therapist (Art, Music, Drama, or Dance Movement) to become a vital member of our team. The selected individual will be tasked with the design, implementation, and enhancement of specialized Arts Therapies, which includes the assessment, treatment, and evaluation of both individual and group sessions utilizing their preferred modality (Art, Music, Drama, or Dance Movement) within the community learning disabilities service.

Key Responsibilities

Continuously assess and evaluate therapeutic effectiveness by employing appropriate service user feedback and outcome metrics.

Oversee and mentor assigned staff, including trainees.

Engage in Quality Improvement initiatives, Research, and Audits regularly.

Deliver educational sessions and training to multi-disciplinary staff, service users, and caregivers as necessary.

Assume a significant role in local service leadership and development.

Job Duties

Client Care

Design and deliver Arts Therapies to clients with diverse mental health needs across various settings, utilizing specialized skills.

Collaborate with the Head Arts Therapist and multi-disciplinary colleagues to develop group-focused Arts Therapies.

Conduct assessments of referred clients, planning and executing therapeutic interventions, while considering risk factors and the complexity of individual needs.

Provide specialized treatment for clients who may struggle with traditional verbal therapies due to cognitive or emotional barriers.

Facilitate referrals to appropriate services post-assessment or upon discharge.

Work collaboratively within a team, respecting diverse approaches to assessment and treatment.

Manage initial service assessments and respond to service demands as they arise.

Evaluate risk and implement measures to ensure a safe and supportive therapeutic environment.

Maintain professionalism and appropriate boundaries at all times.

Conduct ongoing evaluations of client progress to effectively manage time-limited therapy, including therapy conclusion and follow-up.

Support trainee Arts Therapists through placements, providing clinical supervision and management.

Utilize adaptive communication techniques to facilitate interactions between therapists and clients.

Develop and oversee arts-based interventions in collaboration with Arts in Health partners.

Clinical Responsibilities

Utilize clinical expertise to contribute to the overall treatment and recovery goals for clients during and after Arts Therapies.

Facilitate joint assessments and collaborative practice as required by the multi-disciplinary team.

Contribute specialist knowledge to the care plans through participation in clinical meetings and documentation.

Adapt clinical practices to meet the unique challenges of various environments.

Seek guidance from senior staff or experienced Arts Therapists to enhance clinical practice.

Contribute to the Trust's Arts Therapies Research and Quality Improvement initiatives.

Work independently while knowing when to seek clinical and managerial support.

Administrative Duties

Adhere to Trust procedures regarding incidents and complaints.

Maintain accurate records of client interactions, ensuring compliance with national and Trust policies.

Collect and report statistics as required by the service.

Engage actively in line management supervision and personal appraisal processes.

Utilize established communication systems within the service and related organizations.

Understand and comply with relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act and data protection regulations.

Management Responsibilities

Provide regular supervision and annual appraisals for direct reports.

Ensure adherence to Trust Policy for those under your management.

Oversee project management and supervision of Arts Therapies and Arts in Health initiatives.

Maintain ethical practice in accordance with professional guidelines and confidentiality policies.

Assist in developing accessible promotional materials regarding Arts Therapies services.

Human Resources

Educate colleagues through workshops and training sessions.

Facilitate training opportunities for trainees as required.

Provide clinical supervision to trainees and manage their caseloads.

Participate in recruitment processes, including developing job descriptions and selection criteria.

Engage in continuous professional development to meet registration requirements.

Performance and Quality Improvement

Implement policies relevant to service delivery and maintain awareness of operational issues.

Regularly review service delivery and propose changes to enhance quality.

Ensure confidentiality and security of all records.

Participate in team meetings and development forums to shape service philosophy and operations.

Promote evidence-based practice and engage in Quality Improvement initiatives.

Stay informed about new developments in Arts Therapies.

Maintain a personal portfolio for Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Financial and Physical Resources

Manage the maintenance and storage of Arts Therapies equipment.

Ensure confidentiality of client materials and their secure storage.

Regularly check the stock of Arts Therapies equipment and advise on necessary orders.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • MA (or equivalent) in an Arts Therapies modality.
  • Relevant degree.
  • Registration with the HCPC for Art Therapists, Music Therapists, and Dramatherapists.
  • Evidence of working towards UKCP registration for Dance Movement Psychotherapists.
  • Membership of relevant professional registers.

Desirable

  • Further training in psychological practices relevant to the role.
  • Clinical supervision training.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working as an Arts Therapist with individuals with Learning Disabilities.
  • Experience in a multi-disciplinary team setting.
  • Post-qualification experience in individual and group work.
  • Experience with clients facing secondary care mental health challenges.
  • Experience in providing clinical supervision to trainees.

Desirable

  • Experience in teaching and training about Arts Therapies.
  • Experience in both acute and community settings.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Understanding of the mental health needs of adults with Learning Disabilities.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and policies.
  • Familiarity with Arts Therapies research.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build therapeutic relationships with clients.

Desirable

  • Experience in line management of junior staff.
