Join Our Team as a Play Worker

Great Ormond Street Hospital is seeking a dedicated Play Worker to become an integral part of our vibrant Play Team. In alignment with our collaborative approach, you will work alongside fellow team members to provide support to children, young individuals, and their families during their time at the hospital.

Play is a vital component of our patients' well-being, and in this role, you will utilize your knowledge of play and child development to design engaging play activities that enhance the overall patient experience.

Your role as a Play Worker will significantly improve the hospital journey for children and young people, whether in a playroom or at their bedside. By infusing creativity, enthusiasm, and commitment into your work, you will create impactful play opportunities while offering essential support to families.

As part of the Respiratory department, you will be instrumental in delivering high-quality, comprehensive play services to all children and families across the Trust, ensuring a sense of safety and comfort within the hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and lead play sessions for individual children and groups
  • Establish a nurturing and secure play atmosphere
  • Encourage involvement from parents, caregivers, and siblings in play activities
  • Provide a variety of inclusive play options
  • Ensure cleanliness of toys in accordance with infection control standards
  • Collaborate with the Play team and other healthcare professionals
  • Maintain accurate records of activities
  • Refer children who require specialized support to Play Specialist colleagues
Essential Qualifications
  • Diploma in Child Care/Play Work or a related discipline
  • Strong understanding of child development principles
  • Experience working with children and young people
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities
  • Commitment to maintaining professional boundaries
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Experience with Makaton or similar communication techniques
  • Understanding of the significance of play in healthcare environments
