Position Overview

The City of Edinburgh Council is seeking a dedicated Child and Family Support Specialist to join our team at the Wester Hailes Healthy Living Centre.

Salary: £30,751 - £36,312
Hours: 36 per week

Role Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive support to children from pre-birth to 2 years old who require safeguarding, are in care, or are identified as needing assistance, along with their families or caregivers.

This role emphasizes a strengths-based and restorative approach, fostering positive relationships with children, families, and caregivers. The aim is to identify and implement strategies that enhance the safety and wellbeing of children and their families.

As part of a collaborative initiative, you will engage closely with various partners, including social work services and health professionals, to deliver intensive support to vulnerable families in Edinburgh.


Key Duties:
  • Provide intervention and protection for young children, ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
  • Act as the lead professional for children in need, adhering to relevant guidelines.
  • Conduct assessments to determine needs and risks, facilitating appropriate support measures.
  • Build trusting relationships with families while respecting their rights and promoting empowerment.
  • Contribute to the development and review of Child's Plans, ensuring effective outcomes.
  • Prepare detailed reports for relevant meetings, articulating assessments based on evidence and professional judgement.
  • Collaborate with various agencies to enhance service delivery for children and families.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to stay informed about relevant theories and legislation.
  • Provide family-based interventions and participate in training programs.
  • Supervise and assess family interactions as required.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by management.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Professional qualification or equivalent experience in social services or child and family support.
  • Ability to assess complex situations and engage individuals with diverse needs.
  • Knowledge of child development theories and relevant legal frameworks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to maintain positive relationships with families and professionals.
  • Experience in risk assessment and crisis management.
  • Capacity to work independently while demonstrating initiative and accountability.
