Position Overview

The Red Cell Haematology division operates within the UCL/UCLH Haematology Department, focusing on educational initiatives, service enhancement, and clinical support for individuals affected by haemoglobin disorders and uncommon inherited anaemias.

This is a comprehensive, full-time fellowship lasting one year, situated at UCH, aimed at advancing the treatment of red cell patients throughout the Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre Network.

The selected candidate will engage in clinical practice with diverse patient demographics and collaborate with various healthcare professionals. A key expectation is to gain insights into the management and educational frameworks within the NHS to drive improvements in patient care.

The fellow will actively contribute to the overarching objectives of the Red Cell Network, which encompasses staff development, participation in management discussions at both local and Integrated Clinical System levels, as well as national (NHSE) engagements across the designated area.

Core Responsibilities

The role entails an average of 10 Programmed Activities weekly, divided into approximately 5 PAs for Direct Clinical Care and 5 PAs dedicated to Education and Management within the Red Cell Network.

The fellow will also be involved in the UCLH Haematology on-call rota, which includes additional compensation for out-of-hours duties.

This position is primarily based at UCLH, with the possibility of one day per week allocated for remote work. Upon appointment, the new fellow will collaborate with the Clinical Lead to establish a detailed job plan that includes personal and professional goals.

Direct Clinical Care Responsibilities (5 PA)

- Participation in the Registrar On-call rota

- Attendance at Multidisciplinary Team meetings (1 PA)

- Conducting two clinics weekly, including necessary administrative tasks

Educational and Management Responsibilities (5 PA)

- Engagement in Network meetings

- Conducting service improvement scoping visits

- Involvement in teaching activities

The appointee must possess at least MRCP Part II or an equivalent qualification, MRCPath Part I, and full registration with the General Medical Council. Candidates are encouraged to have at least minimal coverage with a medical defense organization.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Medical degree
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
  • GMC registration and entry on the appropriate GMC Specialist Register
  • Completion of core medical training or equivalent

Desirable

  • Understanding of the Clinical Governance framework of the NHS and awareness of current changes in organizational and management structures

Experience

Essential

  • Currently undergoing specialist training in Haematology
  • Experience in red cell haematology
  • Teaching experience
  • Clinical audit experience
  • Management and committee involvement

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment
