Job Title: Director of Public Affairs and Policy

Company: Betting and Gaming Council

Location: Primarily based in our Westminster offices with some working from home

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: Up to £85,000 + bonus and benefits

Key Responsibilities

Public Policy Leadership

  • Work with the Chief Strategy Officer to ensure the effective planning and implementation of BGC's public policy work to ensure the effective delivery of the strategic objectives;
  • Provide advice to senior colleagues on political and legislative developments that affect the BGC and its members - including being a trusted advisor to the CEO/senior executive team on public affairs;
  • Analyse government policy and legislation and build a view on priorities for BGC, leveraging stakeholders and consultant expertise as necessary;
  • Lead and partner with stakeholders and the internal BGC team to respond to government consultations and develop positions to support the interests of the BGC and its members;
  • Produce clear reports and updates to senior management, Executive Committee, and members as necessary;
  • Ensure the effective management of any BGC committees and working groups relating to public affairs, including chairing meetings where appropriate, ensuring content and materials are prepared, agreeing the agenda, and ensuring accurate minutes are produced;
  • As required and directed, lead on working with external consultants and legal counsel to support BGC's public affairs work.

External Relations

  • Establish, develop and maintain appropriate working relationships with members, the Gambling Commission, DCMS, Treasury, Health, No10, Parliament, the third sector, and other external stakeholders as necessary;
  • Identify relevant external stakeholders to approach on policy topics and advocate BGC's position where appropriate;
  • Proactively look for opportunities to build relationships with external stakeholders, including government, officials and industry colleagues.

Internal Relations

  • Work closely with, and be accountable to, the Chief Strategy Officer for the success of BGC's public affairs work, such that BGC achieves its strategic plan.
  • Work with others across the BGC team to support all workstreams from our strategic plan.
  • Work with others to build a strong, supportive and impactful team in the BGC.
Person Specification

Requirements

  • Strong understanding and experience in the development and execution of public policy with key relationships inside government.
  • Experience of independently creating and delivering on a public affairs strategy.
  • Experience of leading a team and working with stakeholders to work collegiately.
  • Strong influencing, negotiation, and networking skills, with ability to operate in a dynamic and evolving environment.
  • Strong communications skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to translate complex policy matters into simple messages.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities and able to hit the ground running when dealing with complex issues.
  • Self-motivated, well-organised, pragmatic and able to perform tasks independently.
  • Continuous drive and energy to get things done.
